Statement |
| This Website is the result of over 30 years experience of direct involvement in the arts, first with sculpture, then with music and lyric, and most recently with an array of two-dimensional media, not limited to watercolor, oil painting, pastels, pen and ink, and storyboarding ( in the old school tradition). Performance found its way into the mix in the early 90's with the invention of Juan Avocado, my musical alter ego. |
| It is said that a true Renaissance being takes longer than other artists to develop because of the fearless experimentation and investigation required, and the undaunting drive that overrides the failure and initial clumsiness that comes with each new art form. It took Edison almost 1,000 experiments to figure out the light bulb. Even after more than a decade of working with clay, my first dog sculptures, (aside from the first one from 1959 ), looked like pigs to kids. This posed an initial dilemma for someone who had had the good fortune to study with such notable artists as Robert Arneson, Peter Voulkos, Oscar Bucher, and John & Suzanne Stephenson. |
| It is the artist's dream to be proficient in all media. Short of genetic virtuosity, it is a long road, far longer in its time frame of expectations than most all professional careers. Along the way, still other offshoots, like teaching, arts advocacy, public speaking, manufacturing, marketing, packaging and self-imposed organization present themselves to be integral to the creative process. It is a race, kind of like what Shawn Colvin might have meant when she wrote, "Riding Shotgun Down the Avalanche". A lot of time alone. It is not a rat race, but a steeplechase. In this day of categorization, it is the rare artist who defies the niche, to reach out in all directions; switching media, subject and style as it suits, to challenge with a political conscience, and to question the norm. Hemingway and Michelangelo were the most fearless artists I know of; and Rembrandt's Night Watch alone encompasses more knowledge and ability in one painting than I may hope to know in three lifetimes. The Japanese say that it takes that many lifetimes to perfect an artform. I try to take up for it with puppy-like enthusiasm. Three lifetimes? Tell it to Picasso. I'm listening...but don't tell it to me. |
