An exhibition on the creativity of those with special needs.

| The premise of this exhibition is simple: Everywhere art is displayed, there is an implied or stated reference to not touching the art. This concept places fine art, for the most part, beyond the realm of the visually impaired. Alternatively, an exhibition where the artwork is meant to be touched opens the doors for those without eyesight or with failing eyesight, to experience first hand; in this case, works by a collection of exceptional artists, some of them acknowledged American masters.
The opportunity to present such an exhibition came to fruition when I returned to Boulder, and met with Boulder Public Library personnel, Donna Gartenmann, the Special Services Coordinator and Braille Translator, and Karen Ripley, Cultural Programs Supervisor. Their enthusiasm for the exhibition concept led to the presentation that took place in August of 1999. In addition, when the Boulder Arts Commission learned of the exhibition, they provided a "mini-grant" to help us with the costs of mounting the show. Over ten thousand people visited the show in the three weeks it was up |
